Show Me a Way

Show Me a Way

WHO HAS OPENED UP YOUR WORLD and invited you to see a place for yourself and your gifts? Special teachers, healers, mentors, colleagues, friends, and even family members play this role. I was so lucky to be close to my cool aunt Cynthia, who awakened me to the possibilities of a full, juicy life embracing creativity, healing, and personal spirituality. All the things closest to my heart.

IMG_1519 (1)This hand and eye earring came from a trip to LA to visit Cynthia when I was a young woman. The symbol, like my Deep River Healing image, holds a blessing for intuition and awakening.  At the time I felt the pair of earrings was too big and powerful, so I split it with her, and every time I wear mine I feel her spirit.

Cynthia showed me a way of life, full and vibrant, transcending the tiny realm of my conservative, isolated family. I understood from observing her life that a diverse city would nourish and open me up. I saw a thriving independent woman with satisfying work and lots of creative and interesting friends. Cynthia explored her creativity, sought her own spiritual path, and served with insight and compassion as a therapist and bodyworker.

As I grew older, I saw her less as a role model and more of a fallible human being. I understood how Cynthia and I were different, felt compassion for her challenges and mine, and gradually stepped more into my own way of being. But Cynthia has remained an honored inspiration.

Aunts and uncles and non-parent grown up friends are so crucial to kids! We often can show young people a new way to be themselves.

Consider whom you are inspiring just by being you. Whose authentic life are you sparking? Whom are you seeing whole? Whom are you giving permission to be themselves and share their gifts?
