The Empress: Love with Wisdom

The Empress: Love with Wisdom

In the Tarot, the Empress III is the archetype of Love with Wisdom. It’s the Great Mother love, clear with boundaries and deeply nourishing. The Empress is fertile, abundant, and omnipresent.

In this Valentine’s Day season, the Empress is a great antidote to the romantic fantasy of love. What we deeply long for is to feel loved, accepted, seen, and honored for who we truly are. That’s a tall order for another to fulfill if we have withheld that Love with Wisdom from ourselves.

Our great, perhaps untapped power is our ability to bring Love with Wisdom to ourselves, rather than only seeking it in a romantic partner. The more we can see ourselves with this firm and clear love, the more that we will draw people – lovers and platonic friends and family too – who reflect that back to us.

Consider the people you love, who love you. Ask them to remind you of your essence – your strengths, gifts and abilities, the core qualities that make you you. Offer to reflect their essence back to them too. There is nothing so bracing as to be fully seen and to let yourself take in the truth of what your friends see. To be grateful for your own unique being.

So on Valentine’s Day don’t forget to treat yourself as your first, most precious beloved. All the love you share with others springs from that.
