Winter Rain and Cleansing with Rattles

Winter Rain and Cleansing with Rattles

In Northern California we are blessed to receive glorious rain, our healthy pattern for Winter after years of drought. The rain helps us go inward to incubate what we are dreaming up in the darkness. We can go deep and prepare to bring ourselves and our dreaming out to the light.

In cross-cultural shamanic practice, the sound of rattles simulates the rain and has the same cleansing and healing effect on people. It is our first instrument as babies, a way to calm and self-soothe.

If you don’t have a rattle, you can use a tightly closed glass jar of dried beans or rice. Or you can buy a rattle 5-1at a music store, a toy store, or a spiritual book store. Some are soft and sandy, others are loud and thunderous. Here’s an array of my rattles: Deer dew claw and bone rattle; gourd rattles; bull kelp rattles; seed pod shaker and rattle; clay rattle; woven rattle; plastic shaker.

A simple practice is to cleanse your auric field, your personal energy bubble that surrounds and protects you. Your aura is like a giant energy egg standing on its end, encasing you with its bottom nestled into the earth and its pointy end up. A healthy aura moves with you and at least encompasses your wingspan all around you. Ideally your aura should be composed of only your personal energy. But we as humans merge unhealthily and easily, taking on other people’s energy and giving our energy to others. The thing is, you can only use your own energy.

So take your rattle and shake it all around you, from the soles of your feet on up. Envision cleansing yourself, shaking off anything that’s not truly yours. Experiment with back and forth rattling, or side to side, or a swirling motion, playing with the different sounds and rhythms. Spend extra time with areas of constriction or pain. Envision this soft rain and persistent rattling breaking down stagnation to let your energy and emotions move freely.

This is especially good if you’ve had a fight with a friend; are feeling depressed; don’t feel grounded; or generally want to shift your energy and emotions.

Contact me for specific rattle work we could do together in a session. May you enjoy this time of deep inner dreaming and preparation as the Light returns next week at the cross-quarter holiday of mid-winter/Imbolc/Brigid/Candlemas.
